Rs.5 crore sanctioned

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government on Thursday sanctioned Rs.5 crore for paying the price of paddy procured by the Civil Supplies Corporation. The State Government was paying a procurement price of Rs.850 per quintal in place of the Rs.620 fixed by the Centre. The funds from the Centre and the State were being used for the purpose. The Government has so far procured 6.37 lakh quintal of paddy, a press release from the office of the Food and Civil Supplies Minister said. — Special Correspondent

Decision on award hailed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Government's Panchayati Raj award for the People's Plan Campaign was a recognition to the people of Kerala, elected members, officials and campaign activists, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty said. Mr. Kutty said in a message here on Thursday that the campaign had to face a lot of challenges and criticism. This was also a recognition to Kudumbashree. CPI(ML) Red Flag to back LDF in bypoll

Kozhikode: The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Red Flag will support the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate George M. Thomas in the byelection from Thiruvambadi Assembly constituency. Anticipatory bail denied

THRISSUR: District sessions judge K.L. Joseph has dismissed the anticipatory bail petition moved by Chairman of the Federal Bank M. Venugopalan and some other senior officials of the bank. The judge in his order said he was dismissing the petition as the other accused had moved the High Court for getting anticipatory bail. Mr. Venugopalan and the other bank officials had moved the anticipatory bail petition in a case registered against them at the Ollur police station near here alleging that they had fraudulently carried out some dealings using the money deposited in the account of industrialist A.C. Chummar of Akkara House, Ollur. — Staff Reporter

IUML stages dharna

KOLLAM: The district unit of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) staged a dharna at Chinnakada on Tuesday evening in protest against the alleged misrule of the Left Democratic Front Government. The dharna was inaugurated by IUML district president A. Yunus Kunju. DCC president Sooranand Rajashekaran and RSP(B) leader Shibu Baby John addressed. The demonstrators voiced their protest against the rising number of custodial deaths. They also protested against the rise in the price of essential commodities. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

KOTTAYAM: Four persons have been arrested in connection with the unnatural death of Thulaseedharan Nair, 48, a private money-lender in Changanassery, nine months ago. P.B. Vijayan, DySP, who is leading the special squad probing the death, said the main accused in the case was in jail in connection with a vehicle theft case. — Staff Reporter

Congress plans march

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha District Congress Committee (DCC) will take out a march to the Alappuzha District Collectorate on Saturday in protest against the Government's negligence in checking the outbreak of chikungunya.

DCC president C.R. Jayaprakash said at a press conference here that the Leader of the Opposition would inaugurate the march. — Staff Reporter
