MANGALORE: Smart work by the police here ensured that two events, which could have raised communal passions in the district, went off without a hitch. While the first of the events was the inauguration of "Sadbhavana Samavesha" rally organised by Karnataka Komu Souhardha Vedike on November 18, the second was the "Sudarshana Ratha" being taken out by Sunil Kumar, BJP MLA, Karkala. The ratha was flagged off on November 20, 2006 at Belthangady. The ratha was supposed to pass through the district before entering Chikmagalur via Udupi on November 26. While these events would have been held on a grand scale as planned authorities were not willing to risk another major law and order situation. Accordingly, the organisers of the samavesha were asked to scout for another venue to hold their convention and the BJP was asked to avoid sensitive spots in the district through which they intended to take out the ratha yatra.
Change in venue
B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, said the vedike's request to hold the samavesha at Nehru Maidan with use of public address system was turned down. The vedike subsequently organised the event at Shanti Nilaya, a hall at Balmatta. There was heavy police presence at the venue of the meeting. Likewise, the yatra, which started from Belthangady, went to Subramanya, Sullia and Puttur before entering Udupi, skirting all communally sensitive areas in the district.
