MANGALORE: It will be mandatory for all areas of poultry sector, be it hatcheries, poultry feed manufacturing units and farms to register with Department of Animal Husbandry, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik, has said. This is aimed at providing a regulated market for poultry products in the wake of rapid growth of poultry rearing activity, which was earlier done on a small scale. The same activity is now done on a large scale.

Addressing presspersons at the end of his three-day tour of the district here on Thursday Mr. Naik said neither the department nor the Government had concrete statistics about the number of hatcheries, feed manufacturing units or farms in the State. This hampered official efforts to tackle outbreak of any disease or epidemic among poultry and to provide relief to affected farmers, he said.

According to him, registration of these entities would enable the Government to better regulate the poultry industry. Mr. Naik said it would ensure that people have access to qualitative chicklings for rearing and poultry products.

The State has 11 animal development farms spread across 4,291.42 hectares and these are being used to rear bulls. Noting that development of these farms has suffered owing to resource constraints in the department, Mr. Naik said the Government was thinking about seeking assistance from various milk producers' cooperative unions in the State.

Government has issued an order on Saturday clearing the appointment of 133 veterinary doctors. Karnataka Public Service Commission has begun the process of recruiting 41 of these doctors. KPSC would be asked to recruit additional 77 doctors once a proposal to this effect is officially cleared. Decks have also been cleared for appointment of 300 veterinary inspectors.
