Karunanidhi to inaugurate port trust celebrations

CHENNAI: A host of programmes will be organised as part of the 125th year celebrations of the Chennai port.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the celebrations on January 17 and lay the foundation for the port's second container terminal, which will be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis at a cost of Rs.492 crore. The project has been awarded to the combine of Port of Singapore-SICAL Limited.

At the same function, Mr. Karunanidhi will lay the foundation for three projects at the Ennore port. The projects are a Rs.500-crore iron ore terminal; Rs.350-crore coal terminal; and Rs.196-crore liquid bulk terminal. Besides bringing out a special commemorative book, written by historians S. Muthiah and Narsaiah, detailing the history of the port, the Chennai Port Trust will distribute gold coins, weighing five grams each, and a wrist watch to all its employees. The Chief Minister will dedicate a super-speciality diabetes hospital for port employees, says a release.
