Court appoints observer to probe students' complaint

CHENNAI: Following complaints from students of the Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute that they are given attendance but not allowed to attend classes by the management, the Madras High Court has appointed a court officer as observer.

The observer shall be present in the college to ascertain the situation and apprise the court of the circumstances, the court said. The order was passed by the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru, ruling on petitions filed by students, who said they were being pressured to pay "exorbitant" fees by the management.

Fee structure

While the management insists that the Permanent Committee for Fixation of Fee in Self-Financing Professional Colleges could not fix the fee structure for the institution, which had become a deemed university, senior counsel for students said the private institution was accorded deemed university status only when they were in the second year.

At the time of their admission it was only an unaided professional college, he said. The matter has been adjourned by a week for further proceedings.
