PM, Sonia pay tribute to Murasoli Maran

Panel decides to unveil 6 statues, including those MGR and Maran

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes to DMK leader and Union Minister Murasoli Maran on his third death anniversary at the DMK party office in Parliament House here on Thursday.

They remembered the leader for bringing India to a leadership role in the tough WTO negotiations. A Parliamentary Committee on Thursday decided to unveil six statues, including those of AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran and DMK leader Murasoli Maran, starting from the first week of December.

Other leaders whose statues will be unveiled include the former Home Minister Indrajit Gupta; Communist leader Bhupesh Gupta; presiding officer of the Central Legislative Assembly Vitthalbhai Patel and Rani Channamma from Kitoor in Karnataka who fought against British.

The decision came in the backdrop of the controversy over reports that Maran's statue was being unveiled soon and that there was no word when MGR's statue would be formally installed. — PTI
