BANGALORE: A 19-year-old woman was set on fire allegedly by her husband at their house in Peenya police station limits on Wednesday night for not bringing more dowry. The police said Soumya, who suffered severe burns, died at a hospital in the early hours of Thursday. A native of Nelamangala in Bangalore Rural district, Soumya had married Krishna Murthy of Binnamangala nine months ago. The couple lived in a rented house in Mallasandra in Peenya. According to the police, Krishna Murthy was harassing Soumya for more dowry. He suspected her of having an affair with another man. Following a quarrel, around 9.30 p.m. he doused Soumya with kerosene and set her on fire, the police said. The Peenya police have registered a case.
Rape charge
The Vijayanagar police have arrested Muniswamy (48), a construction worker, who allegedly raped his 16-year-old daughter. The police said that Muniswamy, a resident of Pattegarpalya, had allegedly raped his daughter at his house on November 13. Muniswamy has two wives and the victim is the daughter of his first wife with whom he lived in Pattegarpalya. On a complaint by a women's organisation, the police subjected the girl to medical examination and subsequently arrested Muniswamy.
