Misuse of `duty drawback' detected
Staff Reporter
KOCHI:
The Customs Preventive Commissionerate, Kochi, has identified misuse of the facility of `duty drawback' by a few exporters of rubber.
Customs (Preventive) Commissioner P. Ayyam Perumal said in a statement here on Thursday that investigation brought to light the duty evasion of Rs.1.80 crore by 17 exporters.
Mr. Perumal said the merchants were exporting technically specified natural rubber (TSNR), otherwise called Indian Standard Natural Rubber (ISNR) under tariff meant for ribbed smoked sheets of natural rubber and others.
He said ISNR was prepared by drying rubber latex and pressing it into blocks.
The processing did not involve inputs that suffered import/excise/service tax. Hence, claiming drawback for goods processed or manufactured from non-duty paid inputs would be against the rules, he said.
