`Speed up process of enlisting roads'

Staff Reporter

Discussions on to find a solution: Jaipal Reddy

NEW DELHI: After getting temporary relief from the Supreme Court for the traders operating from 2,183 newly notified roads, the Centre on Thursday asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to speed up the process of enlisting more roads to be included under mixed land use and commercial categories.

Emerging from the Group of Ministers' meeting called to discuss the Supreme Court's directives granting relief to traders who have given affidavits and undertakings, Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said the civic body would identify more roads where commercial activities were going on and then approach the apex court for clearance.

Stating that several affected traders had been granted major relief by the apex court in its latest directives, Mr. Reddy said the Government would keep an eye on the situation and continue discussions so that a permanent solution could be found to the vexed issue.

On the Court directive asking the monitoring committee to give relief to big traders and showrooms owners only after they make proper parking arrangements, the Union Minister said the Centre would assist the civic body as well as individuals and market associations in creating proper parking facilitiesMr. Reddy, however, ruled out any relaxation for allowing commercial activities in posh `A' and `B' category colonies except on recommendations by residents' welfare associations of these areas. Meanwhile, the MCD continued with its sealing drive on Thursday targeting around 140 units on Najafgarh-Nangloi Road.
