This Day That Age
The death roll in the Ariyalur railway disaster has mounted to 128, including two who died in the hospital after admission. The number of injured is 110. Till the night of November 23 (the day of the accident) 104 bodies had been extricated and the rest were recovered on November 24 from under the debris. All relief operations had to be conducted by train from the Dalmiapuram side. Rescue work and medical relief had to be undertaken from the Tiruchirapalli end, as the movement from the north (Ariyalur) was blocked on account of the breach, due to floods.
