dated November 25, 1956: Death penalty

After an interesting debate on the question whether capital punishment should be abolished or not in the course of which members advanced arguments both for and against, without any party lines, the Lok Sabha finally rejected a private member's Bill seeking to abolish capital punishment. In reply to the debate, the Minister for Legal Affairs, Mr. H.V. Pataskar said that the time was not yet ripe for them to abolish capital punishment in this country. For the sake of a stable society it would be too risky to abolish it. The Minister gave figures to show that the proportion of capital punishment awarded in extreme cases of crime was very low and even among these cases some of them were commuted.
