MoP a crucial input for paddy, coconut 15,000 tonnes of the material to be sold in Kerala KOCHI: The Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) is importing 25,000 tonnes of muriate of potash (MoP) from Lithuania, a State in the former Russian union, for trading in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The vessel carrying the material is expected to reach Kochi by the end of the week, said a press release from FACT here. FACT has been importing MoP owing to the shortage of the product in the South Indian market. MoP is a crucial input for paddy, rubber and plantains. In September, FACT imported 25,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate for trading in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Of the 25,000 tonnes of MoP being imported, 15,000 tonnes will be sold in Kerala and the rest in Tamil Nadu. The press release said that selling imported potash in the Kerala market was not as profitable as selling it in Tamil Nadu due to higher handling charges at the Kochi Port. However, 15,000 tonnes had been earmarked for Kerala to protect the interest of the farmers.
