Letters to the Editor
Sure, Durban was a debacle. But politicians are certainly not competent to comment on Team India's performance. Their performance since Independence has been much more miserable. They should first discipline themselves and learn to spend the taxpayers' money for the benefit of the citizens. People living in glasshouses should not throw stones at others.
N. Mahadevan,
* * * The demand for coach Greg Chappell's head by our MPs is a knee-jerk reaction. It is unacceptable, coming as it does from those who are obsessed with vote banks and divisive politics. For God's sake, stop playing politics in sport.
K. Kapali,
* * * It is unfortunate that our MPs have joined some sections of the media in castigating Chappell for the Indian cricket team's defeat at Durban. Chappell took over at a time when more than half-a-dozen players were in the twilight of their career. Do our MPs want to judge a coach by every performance of Team India?
A.V. Narayanan,
* * * If students do not learn from a good teacher, it is they who are to blame. Indian cricketers are an overindulged lot. Why find fault with Chappell?
M. Sitalakshmi,
* * * The main fault lies with the media. Recently I saw Dhoni having an elaborate discussion with an audience on various subjects in one of the television channels. Has he become so competent overnight? Is his contribution to Indian cricket so big? I also recall how large crowds thronged the saloon where Dhoni had a haircut. Such publicity makes cricketers unmindful of their responsibilities.
S. Chellappan,
