BELGAUM: In view of the increasing number of suicides by workers in the powerloom industry in the district, the Kayakajeevi Coolie Nekarara Sangha, Belgaum, has requested the Government to pay attention to the problems of workers and take steps to prevent the suicides. Sangha leaders Maruti Dhagennavar and Vijay Suldal said they had been trying to draw the attention of the Government, particularly the district administration, to the problems confronting workers in the powerloom sector. However, little attention had been paid to reports of suicides by the workers, the sangha said. Stating that a fresh memorandum was submitted to the district administration in this regard following the alleged suicide by two workers in Vadgaon about a fortnight ago, they said the deceased took to extreme step owing to mounting pressure from private moneylenders and family problems. They attributed the woes of workers to neglect by the Government. It was time the Government took view of the situation, the sangha said .
