Court seeks report on plight of Kashmiri Pandits

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir Government on a public interest litigation petition seeking a White Paper on the plight and condition of Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to move out of their land.

A Bench consisting of Justices K.G. Balakrishnan and D.K. Jain asked them to file a `status report' in four weeks on the existing situation.

The petition by the All-India Kashmiri Samaj and others wanted the displaced Kashmiris involved in all future meetings, negotiations and agreements being entered into by the Government . The Pandits should be declared internally displaced persons . Senior counsel Arun Jaitley and counsel B.L. Wali pleaded for a direction to the Government to declare null and void all distress sales made by the displaced Kashmiris .
