NEW DELHI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has unveiled an initiative to deepen the talent pool available to the IT industry. With lack of suitable trained talent, identified as a key barrier to growth, TCS on Friday said it had launched its science-to-software programme to turn science and computer graduates into immediately employable IT professionals. TCS had already started a pilot project in Chennai with 500 students and planned to ramp up the intake to 2,000 in an academic year, TCS CEO and Managing Director S. Ramadorai said at a news conference here. The seven-month residential programme includes courses in principles of software development and IT, an understanding into their core technologies and exposure to TCS' proprietary tools and quality processes.
"Now is the time to encourage the vast pool of young science graduates to be part of the global growth story. I believe this initiative will broaden the future talent base in the country in a way that can be scaled up when required,'' observed Mr. Ramadorai. Explaining why the company is focussing on science graduates, TCS Human Resources chief S. Padmanabhan said they had attributes like logic and reasoning that were important in the technology services industry.
