COLOMBO: The military on Friday claimed that at least 30 cadres of the LTTE were killed in retaliatory attacks in the north and the east in the last 24 hours. An army statement said 19 Tamil Tiger cadres had been killed on Thursday in Batticaloa where four policemen also died. It said the Tigers had shot dead two civilians in the east. Five Tiger cadres were shot dead in a confrontation in the northern Vavuniya district. The LTTE maintained that it had lost only one combatant and accused the military of killing five youths in Vavuniya district. TamilNet claimed that the army on Friday handed over five "bullet-sprayed dead bodies and an exploded body" to police, claiming that the youths were killed when the army troopers retaliated to gunfire on Thursday night. The sixth youth had killed himself, on Friday, detonating a hand grenade, according to the army. It said the youths were LTTE cadres waiting to penetrate an army area. The youths had a T-56 assault rifle, a hand grenade, 45,000 rupees, fuel and biscuits in their possession, said the army. The United National Party said party leader and Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe will be leaving for India on an official visit from November 27 to December 3. He would visit Calcutta, reach New Delhi on November 29 and meet officials. On December 2, he would deliver a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore.
