Junior National from today

BANGALORE: Nearly 1800 athletes in four age categories — under-20, under-18, under-16 and under-14 — from over 25 States will vie for honours in the 116 events slated to be held over the next five days, at the 22nd junior National athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here.

The championship will be the basis for selecting the probables for the forthcoming World Youth Championship 2007 at Ostrava, Czech Republic, and the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held at Pune in 2008.

Reigning champion Kerala (176 athletes) and Tamil Nadu (157), the runner-up at the last edition, are fielding the largest contingents while host Karnataka, with a good sprinkling of internationals in its ranks, have a 90-member team for the championship. — Principal Correspodent
