Chilli ryots in Khammam happy as price touches all-time high

Staff Reporter

Finer grade of Teja variety fetches Rs. 9,700 per quintal

  • Cold storages, godowns being emptied in view of price rise
  • New arrivals expected some time in December next

KHAMMAM: Chilli farmers are a happy lot in Khammam, for the price has touched an all-time high of Rs. 9,700 per quintal.

Both buyers and sellers are hopeful of further increase as the arrivals have come down considerably and the stocks available in cold storages are limited.

The finer grade chilli of the Teja variety has been found to be the much sought-after by the traders. It was offered at Rs. 9,700 per quintal on Friday as against Rs. 9,500 on Thursday.

    Prompt payment

It was likely to cross Rs. 10,000 if the demand was of any indication, said farmers. Much of the chilli variety purchased from Khammam was routed to Tamil Nadu.

The arrivals were only in the order of 1,500 quintals in the day. The stocks stored in the 12 cold storages in the district headquarters would be in the order of 50,000 bags.

The cold storages and godowns were being emptied in view of the price rise. The payment to farmers was also prompt.

New arrivals were expected some time in December next. The area under chilli was up, from 20,000 hectares to 25,000 hectares. But the crop was badly damaged by pests in Khammam, Kusumanchi, Tirumalayapalem and Nelakondapalli mainly due to abnormal temperatures and poor quality of seed supplied by certain companies.

The yield was affected by 50 per cent in these areas.
