Rail traffic disrupted in Alappuzha

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The rail traffic through Alappuzha was disrupted for about an hour on Friday, following picketing of railway track by Southern Railway Employees' Union members. They were protesting against the arrest of union State president Ben Morris and office-bearers of Alappuzha unit of the union by the Railway Police Force for staging a dharna and using loud speakers.

The dharna was held from morning to afternoon demanding strong action by railways against those who attack gatekeepers at level crosses. When the dharna ended at noon, the RPF arrested union leaders for using loudspeakers without permission.

Following that the union workers blocked the Kayamkulam-Ernakulam passenger train that arrived at the station. The blockade ended after an hour when the leaders were released on bail.
