PROMISING PROTECTION: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom inaugurating a seminar organised as part of `Peechi Utsavam' at the Kerala Forest Research Institute at Peechi, near Thrissur, on Friday.
THRISSUR: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has said that the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) at Peechi, near here, should be made a university. Inaugurating a seminar organised as part of `Peechi Ustavam' at KFRI on Friday, the Minister said the Left Democratic Front Government was committed to protecting forests and would not bow to pressure from the forest mafia. ``One of the significant achievements of the State over the past 50 years has been environmental awareness of the people. Forests in the State can be protected only with the concerted efforts of the public and forest officials,'' the Minister said. The Minister recalled the services of forester T.A. Paul who died while discharging his duty. The `Peechi Ustavam' was held as part of the celebrations to mark the Golden Jubilee of the formation of Kerala. Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLA, presided. District panchayat members K.K. Surendran and Jinni Joy; block panchayat members Bhaskaran Adamkavil and E.M. Varghese; KFRI director J.K. Sharma; Pananchery grama panchayat president Lilli C. Renuka and K.V. Mohammed Kunji of KFRI spoke.
