Nod for more medical colleges

Special Correspondent

Eight organisations plan to start both MBBS and Bachelor in Dental Surgery courses and nine had proposed to go in for only MBBS courses

BHUBANESWAR: Encouraging the private sector to establish medical colleges in the State, the Orissa Government has issued no-objection certificates to as many as 21 organisations.

Replying to a question in the Assembly on Friday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Duryodhan Majhi said eight of these organisations had plans to start both MBBS and Bachelor in Dental Surgery courses and nine had proposed to go in for only MBBS courses. Four of the 21 organisations proposed to have BDS courses only.

The Minister said that of the organisations that had been issued NOC, one had already started the Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar city.

Of the proposed medical colleges, three were to be set up under the aegis of the Western Orissa Development Council (WODC), Mr. Majhi said in reply to another question. The construction of one of the three colleges had already started was already under construction at Jaring near Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district. The two other medical colleges would come up at Bolangir and Rourkela.
