Male crocodile caught from Uyyakondan canal

It was released beyond Kallanai

TIRUCHI : A fully-grown male crocodile, which strayed in the Uyyakondan canal near Vannarapet in the city, on Friday was caught by the Fire and Rescue Service Department personnel.

Measuring over 15 feet in length, the adult crocodile was spotted by a resident at the canal's bank in the morning.

The panic local residents, who gathered in good strength, immediately sounded an alert to the Divisional Fire Office here.

On receipt of information, fire fighters armed with rope went to the spot and caught the reptile with help coming forth from the residents of Vannarapet.

The huge reptile was tied and brought to the Fire Service Station here.

Forest Department authorities here said this was the fifth crocodile to have been caught this year in the district adding that it was the biggest reptile to have been captured by them.

The reptile was later handed over to the Forest Department personnel, who released it into the water bodies beyond Kallanai.
