VIJAYAWADA : The Communist Party of India (CPI) city leaders strongly objected to the opening of a welding training school by the South Central Railway (SCR) at Satyanarayanapuram on Saturday. They tried to stop the inaugural function. But, sensing trouble, a large police force was deployed to prevent any untoward incident.

Led by P. Gowtham Reddy, CPI floor leader in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, the CPI leaders and activists gathered in good strength at the entrance of the welding training school and raised slogans against its opening. They expressed fears that the school involved training in such welding works that would create a lot of pollution and cause problems to the residents of Satyanarayanapuram and other localities.

Memorandum submitted

They submitted a memorandum to SCR divisional railway manager S.K. Sharma, who assured them to examine their concerns and also asked them to meet him at his office so that they would be able to go into details.

Earlier, speaking at the demonstration, Mr. Gowtham Reddy pointed out that the welding training school was a big one and railway staff from different places would come here for training purpose. Chemicals used in various activities would give rise to pollution causing severe harm to local people.

Mr. Gowtham Reddy appealed to the SCR management to shift the school to 25 acres that the VMC gave to the railways at Vambay Colony in exchange for the land of the removed Satyanarayanapuram railway track.

The CPI leaders staged demonstration for over two hours and kept shouting slogans in protesting against the SCR's action.

CPI Corporators Donepudi Shankar, G. Koteswara Rao, I. Appala Naidu, P. Durga Bhavani and others were present. A large number of local people also participated in the protest demonstration.
