A meeting of the legends

Special Correspondent

Cape Town: Between them, the two small men have 69 Test hundreds. Actually, they don't come bigger than Sunil Manohar Gavaskar or Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

It was a meeting of the legends at Newlands here on Saturday during the Indian practice session. Gavaskar walked up to the nets in the corner of the ground where Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were practising.

The sight of Gavaskar walking up to him, lighted up Tendulkar's face. A beaming Sehwag also greeted the legendary former opener.

Soon, Gavaskar had a bat in his hand and Tendulkar watched with rapt attention. It was evident from Gavaskar's movements that he was trying to explain something about the build-up position to Tendulkar.

The discussion lasted almost ten minutes. When The Hindu asked Gavaskar about the little coaching session, he replied, "I was just telling him that he was moving a little across. Tendulkar told me that he had already taken note of this."

India team media manager Rajan Nair said, "Gavaskar had expressed a desire to meet Tendulkar. It came from his side."

Asked about England's plight in the ongoing Ashes series, Gavaskar's sense of humour came to the fore. "How you ever heard of a team winning a five-Test series 7-0! It could happen this time!," he quipped.
