HYDERABAD: The advance sale of beedi leaf for 2007 season in the forest areas of Telangana received an overwhelming response. A press release by C. Sivashankar Reddy, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, said 318 out of 440 units were sold in the auctions that concluded on Friday. The balance units would be put up for sale on December 7. The total anticipated revenue from the sale was Rs. 31.99 crores, Rs. 22.59 crores higher than the previous year. The statement added that the demand for beedi leaf had picked up greatly in the market. A reason for increase in the revenue was the decision of the Government to distribute the entire net revenue back to the beedi leaf collectors. The Forest Department would start distributing the net revenue of 2006 season to the beedi leaf collectors during January. Beedi leaf collection in Telangana was a major social security scheme during summer when substantial wages were earned by the poorest of poor living in villages on the fringes of forest.
