BHUBANESWAR: For more than 2,000 Telugu families from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, who have made this capital city their home away from home, a feeling of festivity was in the air as the two-day golden jubilee celebration of the five-decade-old Andhra Cultural Association (ACA) began here. The inaugural function was a unique show of spirit of unity in diversity of the composite Indian culture. Women members of the association sang a Telugu patriotic song followed by a similar rendition in Oriya.
Souvenir released
Later, a senior citizen recited a poem by popular Oriya poet Gangadhar Meher that describes how motherland and mother tongue must be revered as one's mother. And much to the cheer of the community members, Cultural Minister Surya Narayan Patro addressed the gathering in Telugu. He also released a souvenir brought out to mark the occasion. While Governor Rameshwar Thakur could not come for the inauguration as scheduled due to his visit to Andhra Pradesh, his secretary and representative S. Sanyal addressed. Remembering the timely assistance of Andhra Pradesh government during the 1999 Orissa super cyclone, Mr. Sanyal called upon the ACA to work for cultural exchange programmes between the two states and facilitate translation of literary works from Telugu to Oriya and vice versa. Andhra Cultural Association president P. Venugopal Rao and others also addressed the gathering.
