MADURAI: Violation of admission norms has come to light in a few B. Ed. colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. It has been revealed that these institutions had admitted students without the requisite marks in degree courses for the B. Ed. programme this academic year. University officials told The Hindu on Saturday that more than 50 such admissions had been made in seven B. Ed. colleges and the violations were taken to the notice of the Directorate of Collegiate Education a few days back. These colleges were located in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts and the university might not allow `errant students' to appear for examinations, officials said. As per norms, a candidate seeking B. Ed. admission must have secured a minimum of 45 per cent of marks in the degree examinations; "but in these cases many of them scored just-pass marks (35)." The violations were detected when the university received the examination application forms from such students. The Government representatives who attended the Syndicate meeting on November 23 were against allowing these students to sit for the examinations, an official said. The university Syndicate held a discussion on the issue and decided that erring colleges must be taken to task. P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, said that the Government would take action against these colleges and the university would frame new regulations for B. Ed. colleges seeking affiliation.
