Thanjavur: With the onset of northeast monsoon, a large number of winged visitors have arrived at Vaduvur and Udhayamarthandapuram sanctuaries in Tiruvarur district. The sprawling lake at Vaduvur with the Kothandaramaswamy Temple in its backdrop is full of birds giving a pleasant sight to passers-by and tourists. According to Mr. Venkatesh, Wild Life Warden, Nagapattinam, under whose control the bird sanctuaries fall, Coots are found in large numbers in Vaduvur and Purple Moorghen in Udhayamarthanadapuram. Other winged visitors in both the sanctuaries are little, cat and large egrets, Ibis, Painted Stork, Grey Pelican, Pintail Duck, Teals and Herons. The Vaduvur lake, which houses a sanctuary, is 25 km from Thanjavur and attracts more than 30 species of water fowl. A favourite spot for migratory birds, more than 20,000 birds visit this area every year in the months of November and December. Udhayamarthandapuram birds' sanctuary has a sprawling area of 46 hectares and is located 50 km from Tiruvarur. During every monsoon, nearly 10,000 migratory birds congregate at this sanctuary. Notable among the migratory birds are Coot, Grey Herons, White Ibis, Openbill Storks, Night Heron and Purple Heron.
