Over 100 injured in Tinsukia clash
Tinsukia:
Over 100 people, including two policemen, were injured and three government vehicles set ablaze in a clash on Saturday between security forces and people protesting a government decision to create a tribal autonomous council in a primarily non-tribal area in Tinsukia district of Assam.
Indefinite curfew has been imposed in the Lekhapani area of the district where the clash occurred.
Roads blocked
Officials here said non-tribals blocked national highways and roads leading to the venue of a function where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was to make an announcement about the creation of the council on the occasion of the fourth triennial convention of the Tirap Autonomous Council Demand Committee.
Fearing untoward incidents, security forces did not allow Mr. Gogoi to come to the venue and protesters later dispersed.
Policemen attacked
But after about 45 minutes, thousands took out a procession and began pelting stones at the CRPF and policemen.
The security personnel first burst teargas shells and then resorted to a baton-charge.
When this failed to disperse the mob, they fired in the air, officials said.
In the baton-charge and pell-mell, over 100 people sustained injuries. Six of them were admitted to hospital. PTI
