Training students for careers

For the Career Guidance and Placement Committee (CGPC) of University College, Thiruvananthapuram, the selection of five students from the College as `voice trainees' in Genpact, a BPO subsidiary of the General Electric Company, has come as a shot in the arm.

The five were among 10 students who were short-listed by Genpact after interviewing 117 students who reported for the campus recruitment programme held at the College on Saturday. The programme was open to final year students of the BA / B.Sc / B.Com courses.

The 117 students from 10 colleges were divided into two groups.

After introducing themselves the students were asked to speak for a minute on a randomly selected topic.

Twenty-four students made it to the second round of the recruitment programme, which consisted of telephonic interviews with Genpact personnel in Gurgaon.

According to S.N. Kumar, who heads the CGPC, the students were asked to speak about themselves, their hobbies and so on during the interview. "The company personnel were gauging the ease with which the candidates spoke in English. This seemed particularly true in the case of the telephonic interview where the conversation skills were assessed. They were not that concerned about a student's accent and such things," he said.

According to Mr. Kumar, the Committee had organised about 12 programmes since this August aimed at enhancing the soft skills of College students. The programmes included talks on career options in the Indian Navy, on personality development, on conversation skills, on the BPO industry, on conversations over the telephone and classes on `self-introduction.'

Students were also given guidance on how to prepare CVs. The committee also organised mock interviews and group discussions, Mr. Kumar said. A question bank of 1,000 questions related to selection of software trainees has been prepared along with a data bank of all final year students of the B.Sc./ BA /M.Sc. / MA courses.
