Bangalore: Sharan Desai is an information technology professional who has spent several years working in the United States and is now back home, specialising in technology solutions for the banking and financial services. Mr. Desai is also interested in things far removed from technology. He spends his spare time trying to discover the lesser-known historical monuments around Bangalore and Mysore and campaigning hard for their preservation. In 1996, he was in the U.S. and was part of the Indian community there working for President Bill Clinton's re-election. He found Mr. Clinton proud of the achievements of Americans of Indian origin. With the former U.S. President to visit Bangalore on November 30 for a series of India Leadership Summits being held in three cities, Mr. Desai wanted to gift him something different. "I have seen ship models inside bottles and other objects and wondered how they were created. With a bit of reading and a lot of effort, I managed to get a portrait of Clinton inside a bottle," he says. Four frames had to be inserted separately as was the rolled-up portrait and then assembled with the help of copper wires and dexterous fingers. "It took me 10 days to complete the task. Next I want to do something similar with a portrait of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and present it to him," he says.
