Over 90 p.c. gold sold in country `impure': BIS

CHANDIGARH: Even as the Centre is making hallmarking of gold jewellery mandatory from 2008, the Bureau of India Standards (BIS) said on Sunday that majority of the gold sold in the country by jewellers was impure.

A market survey recently conducted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs through the BIS revealed that more than 90 per cent samples of gold collected randomly from 16 major cities in the country failed the purity test, BIS Additional Director General Yash Pal Singh told reporters here on the sidelines of a seminar on hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery.

Mr. Singh said that in 2000, the BIS conducted a market survey on 120 samples drawn from eight cities which revealed failure of 88 per cent of samples. ``In Chandigarh all the 10 samples drawn have failed,'' he said.
