Puducherry: The one-day conference of Puducherry Region Farm Workers' Union, held here on Saturday, urged the administration to distribute free farmlands to the farm labourers emulating the pattern adopted by the Governments of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala. Its secretary L. Kalivarathan said that the conference also wanted Dalit farmers should be given lands. Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi had already given the promise in his address to the Budget session of the Assembly. Another resolution said that the Centre should bring Puducherry and Karaikal districts under the National Rural Employment Guarantee programme. Other pleas were: establishment of a Welfare Board, free house site pattas, 50 kilo free rice and a cash relief of Rs.1,000 to each of the farm labourer during rainy days and formulation of a comprehensive insurance scheme for them and farmers.
