Appointed Auxiliary Bishop

KOCHI: Monsignor Joseph Karikkassery has been appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Varappuzha by Pope Benedict XVI. The appointment of the Auxiliary Bishop was announced simultaneously at the Vatican and in Kochi, the headquarters of the Varappuzha Archdiocese, on Saturday. The date of consecration of the new Auxiliary Bishop will be decided later. The new Auxiliary Bishop hails from Karthedam on the Vypeen Island. He was ordained a priest in December 1973 and has been on the advisory committee of the Archdiocese of Varappuzha for the last five years. — Staff Reporter

World lawyers' meet

KOCHI: The International Association of Democratic Lawyers' international bureau meeting will be held at Kochi on December 19and 20. Some 75 delegates from 22 countries will attend the meeting, which will be opened by V.R. Krishna Iyer. The meeting precedes the December 22 and 23 national conference of Indian Association of Lawyers. — Special Correspondent

Report denied

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation president T. Peter has denied reports that election of office-bearers of the Federation has already taken place. In a statement here on Sunday, he said the State conference of the Federation is slated to be held here only on December 2 and 3 and there is, therefore, no basis for the report. He alleged that some persons have been trying to make organisation subservient to a particular political party and called upon fish workers to see through the games of such vested interests. — Special Correspondent

New commerce

policy soon

Kozhikode: The CPI(M)-led LDF Government in Kerala will soon formulate a comprehensive commerce policy to ensure more benefits to traders, State Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said here on Sunday. "We will soon come out with a comprehensive commerce policy to further encourage the trading sector," he said. He was inaugurating a regional camp of the traders' organisation Vyapari Vyavasaya Ekopana Samithi. — PTI

Honour for vocalist

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Carnatic vocalist Parassala B. Ponnammal has been chosen for the `Sangeetha Paramaachaarya' Award instituted by the Adi Sankara Veda Vedamga Samskrita Sahakarana Vidyabhyasa Sangham here. The award would be presented to her at a function to be held here on December 31. — Special Correspondent

Meet on digital libraries

KOZHIKODE: A six-day international workshop on digital libraries using the open-source software Greenstone is being organised by the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K), on its campus from November 27 to December 2. The workshop is being jointly organised by UNESCO, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of the Union Government and IIM-K. Ian H. Witten, director of Greenstone Digital Library Software, New Zealand, is leading the workshop, Saji Gopinath, chair, Faculty Development Programme (FDP), IIM-K, and R.P. Suresh, Professor, IIM-K, said at a press conference here on Sunday. V. Rajaraman, considered the father of computer science in India, will attend the workshop. — Staff Reporter

Kochubava remembered

THRISSUR: Kerala Sahitya Akademi president M. Mukundan on Saturday described T.V. Kochubava as a writer who imbibed the spirit of the modern age. Addressing a meeting to commemorate the seventh death anniversary of Kochubava here, Mr. Mukundan said Kochubava emerged on the scene when modernism came to a standstill. — Staff Reporter

KSEB transformer catches fire

THRISSUR: A transformer, installed at a powerhouse of the Kerala State Electricity Board at Viyyur here caught fire on Sunday. Fire and Rescue Services Personnel reached the spot at 11.30 a.m. and doused the fire. — Staff Reporter

Two rescued from well

THRISSUR: Two persons were rescued by Fire and Rescue Services personnel from a well near Parappur Church on Sunday. The Peramangalam police said Ouseppachan, 45, and Pappachan, 36, were found in the well in an inebriated state. Both quarrelled with the firemen when they tried to rescue them, the police said. — Staff Reporter
