CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala has notified that the Special Initiatives subject will be allocated to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. — Staff Reporter

Exam results

CHENNAI: Results of the written examination held for recruitment of graduate teachers in government schools will be declared in the first week of December. A release issued by School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said 72,000 candidates appeared for 3,500 vacancies. With the help of computers, the "optical mark reader" answer sheets are evaluated twice. The selection is made on the basis of merit cum communal roster and in a transparent manner.

According to another release, the system of counsellingadopted for transfer of teachers and village administrative officers, has been extended to doctors, nurses and pharmacists. — Special Correspondent

Notification on electing panels

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has notified November 30 as the last date for convening meetings to elect standing committees of the Tirunelveli Corporation. Chairmen and members must be elected for the accounts, education, public health, taxation and finance, town planning and works committees. — Staff Reporter

"Pay ex gratia to NLC contract workers"

CHENNAI: All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday urged the Neyveli Lignite Corporation to continue to provide 8.33 per cent ex gratia to contract workers. In a statement, she said there should be no discrimination against the contract labourers. — Special Correspondent

Protests planned

CHENNAI: The Tamilnadu Commercial Taxes Services Association will organise demonstrations on Tuesday in all district headquarters opposing the department's move to outsource certain work and appointment of computer professionals on consolidated salary. General secretary V. Devan said the body was also against the department outsourcing the proposed call centre (being set up to provide clarifications on the forthcoming value- added tax regime). It also wanted the Government to fill 2,500 vacancies in the department. — Special Correspondent

4 killed in accident

KRISHNAGIRI: Four persons died when a container lorry rammed a two-wheeler at Melumalai near here on Sunday.

The police said Kartik (20), Nizam (22) and Venkatesh (24), employees of a private company in Hosur, were travelling on the two-wheeler to Mathur when the lorry going to Chennai hit the vehicle, killing them on the spot. After hitting the two-wheeler, the lorry overturned. The cleaner, Sankar of Gingee, was also killed. Driver Mujhbur Rehman was admitted to hospital. — Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Five independent councillors of the Udhagamandalam municipality joined the DMK in the presence of deputy general secretary and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin at the party headquarters on Sunday. - Special Correspondent

Man drowns

ERODE: Kandasamy (28) of Muthampalayam, Palladam, drowned in the Cauvery river on Sunday morning. According to the police, he came to Bhavani Kooduthurai with his family to perform some pooja. Kandasamy while taking bath in Kooduthurai drowned. His body was recovered later.

PMK demonstration

ERODE: Protesting against the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to India, the PMK volunteers led by Bhavani MLA K.V. Ramanathan conducted a demonstration on Sunday before the Municipal Office, Erode. They demanded the Union Government to send back the Sri Lankan President to his country immediately and urged not to conduct any talks with him. About fifty members of Tamilaga Thozilalar Munnani take out a procession on Sunday afternoon from Government Headquarters Hospital junction to Nasiyanure road and burnt Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his effigy. Police arrested the protestors. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Vadugapatty Town Panchayat president C. Rajan, belonging to the AIADMK, joined the DMK along with about 300 AIADMK members, before the Handlooms and Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja on Saturday evening.

SALEM: Ex-servicemen who had failed to renew their registration with the special employment section of the Ex-servicemen Welfare Office (EWO) in 2004 and 2005 can renew now.

Roads relaid

PUDUKOTTAI: Works to the tune of Rs. 3.81 crore are being implemented under the tsunami emergency package programme in the coastal blocks of Avudayarkoil and Manamelkudi in the district.

A total of 29 roads to a cumulative length of 24.5 km are being re-laid and 22 culverts are being constructed.

The Collector, S.J. Chiru, in a press release on Sunday, said that the road works are being executed in places such as Meemisal, Kattumavadi, Ponnagaram Ambedkar Nagar, Rajathoppe, Ammapattinam and Ayipattinam.

The Collector recently inspected some of these works.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 114.75 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 7,874 cusecs and the discharge, 100 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Two students drown

RAMANATHAPURAM : Two students drowned in the Vaigai at Paramakudi near here on Sunday.

Sources said five persons went to the Vaigai to take bath. Of them, Anand Kumar (18), son of Rajendran, a plus-two student and Siva (13), son of Vetrilingam, eight standard student, went missing. Fire service personnel rescued the bodies.

Demonstration

DINDIGUL : A total of 165 members of the Pattali Makkal Katchi staged a demonstration in Dindigul, Natham and Palani, condemning the official visit of the Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Theni

The cadres also staged a demonstration in Theni and Bodi.

According to the Director (Marketing), Tandem, S. Sundara Pandian, M.M. Vallnayaki, K. Janaki, L. Jane Prathebaand S.L. Rajmon Praveen passed the examination. — Staff Reporter

Medical camp

TIRUNELVELI: The Tamil Nadu Thawhedh Jamaath conducted

a medical camp here on Sunday for the flood-affected population of Pettai and Tirunelveli town.

More than 500 persons attended the camp.
