"Reconsider payments through ECS"

Says infrastructure was not available

  • "Those drawing less salary are not conversant with it"
  • "Many have to travel long distance to withdraw money"

CHENNAI: The Tamilnadu Government Employees' Association on Sunday urged the State Government to roll back its decision to extend ECS (electronic clearing services) payments to its employees in rural areas.

While payment using the ECS, offered by banks, were acceptable in towns and cities, it was not suitable for employees in rural areas as the requisite infrastructure was not available in such locations, association president K. Rajkumar told presspersons here. Employees such as anganwadi workers, drawing relatively less salary, were not conversant with the system. As the infrastructure required for the system was not available, many employees had to travel long distance to withdraw money.

The association would be highlighting this issue, besides demanding the State Government to fill up several vacancies in departments during its participation in the nationwide strike call given by central trade unions on December 14. The agitation opposed the new pension scheme and disinvestment in public sector undertakings.
