SALEM: St. Fatima Girls Higher Secondary School, Omalur, will be re-opened on December 1, Chief Educational Officer S. Sethurama Varma has said. The school, which was closed after the violence sparked by the death of a girl student, S. Sukanya, under mysterious circumstances on Saturday last, will start functioning following a request made by the parents at a meeting here on Friday. "Security will be provided, and the students need not fear coming back to school," Mr. Varma told reporters on Sunday. The school administration, he said, agreed to transfer 13 staff members, including the principal and the warden, and to fulfil a majority of the demands the parents raised. "A committee, consisting of Police, Revenue and Education Department officials, will continue to monitor the functioning of the school. Steps will be taken to ensure effective functioning of the parent-teacher association," Mr. Varma said. Visiting hours would be introduced, and the management had been advised not to resort to any punitive measure. The management agreed to provide a separate entry for the church on the school premises. If the students wished to get transfer to other schools, they would be issued transfer certificates except for Standard X and Plus-Two students, as they had to be sit for the public examinations in a few months. He said that except the work books in a few classes, the project works and the transfer certificates of students were found undamaged. The loss of working days due to the closure would be compensated during the holidays after the half-yearly examinations.
