Women asked to fight against exploitation

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The Karnataka High Court judge and working president of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) V. Gopala Gowda called upon all the concerned to make "effective" the laws preventing dowry harassment.

He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop organised jointly by KSLSA, Belgaum District Legal Services Authority and Department of Women and Child Development, here on Saturday. Belgaum district and sessions judge Arun Choudapurkar presided over the inaugural function.

Though the Indian democracy has come a long way since independence, social evils such as dowry system continue to be a matter of great concern for the governments and the right-thinking members of public, he said.

He said that both the receiver and the giver of dowry were equally responsible for the illegal transaction.

Awareness needed

Greater level of awareness among various sections of public was needed to eradicate this evil practice, he added.

Mr. Gowda said that women must know their constitutional rights. They must empower themselves to stand against exploitation and practices such as dowry, he added.

Nataraj of Maharaja Mudakari Nayak College, Chitradurga; A.V.Chandrashekhar, member secretary of KSLSA and S.T. Ramesh, Director General of Police (Prisons), were present.
