Implement Mahajan panel report: Vatal

Bangalore: The Centre should take steps to implement the recommendations of the Mahajan Commission report in toto after its affidavit in the Supreme Court on Maharashtra's border row with Karnataka, said Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samiti leader Vatal Nagaraj, MLA, on Sunday.

The samiti would observe December 11 as a "black day" throughout the State, he said and called for people's support in "exhibiting the strength of Kannadigas."

Demonstrations had been planned and there would be road blockades also, he said.

Speaking to a gathering of the samiti members, Mr. Nagaraj said Kasaragod should be merged with Karnataka, as recommended by the Mahajan panel.

Daily wage employees to protest

Bidar: Members of the Karnataka State Daily Wage Employees' Federation will stage a "Do or die" protest in Bangalore from December 12, demanding regularisation of their services and equal pay for equal work. Federation president K.S. Sharma told presspersons in Bidar on Sunday that the federation had urged the State Government to promulgate an Ordinance to regularise the 17,000 daily wage employees in various departments.

If not, we would be forced to launch an indefinite agitation, he said.

He asked Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti to keep their promise on regularising the services of these employees. — Staff Correspondent

Idol immersion

TUMKUR: A large number devotees gathered for the annual event of the immersion of the mega sized "Guluru Ganesha" idol in the Gulur tank, 9 km south of Tumkur on Sunday. The immersion was preceded by a 23-hour non-stop procession on the main streets of the temple town, Gulur.

Award for co-op. bank

TUMKUR: The Tumkur Grain Merchants' Cooperative (TGMC) Bank Ltd. has bagged the "Best Urban Cooperative Bank in the State Award" instituted by the Karnataka State Cooperatives' Federation. Bank president N.R. Jagadhish told presspersons here on Sunday that the bank's achievement of "Zero percentage of net NPA" ranked it above 10 other banks that were listed for the award during 2005-06. Mr. Jagadhish said higher productivity per employee was another plus point. With a working capital of Rs. 303.58 crore, the bank was poised to attain the "Schedule Bank Status", he said. Bank's vice-president K.Y. Shivanna and chief executive officer R.S. Raghunandan were present. — Staff Correspondent

Telephone adalat

TUMKUR: General Manger of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. R.N. Sudhakar will hold a "telephone adalat" at the company's head office on Ashoka Road here on Wednesday at 11 a.m., according to a press release. Mr. Sudhakar will hear public grievances on various telecom services offered by the company in Tumkur district. — Staff Correspondent

Sugarcane crushing

Bidar: Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane will crush one-lakh tonnes of sugarcane a month, factory president and former Minister Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli said in Bidar on Saturday. He said the factory had plans to crush six lakh tonne of sugarcane this year. The sugar yield was 10.5 per cent. The cogeneration unit was producing eight MW of electricity. Another six MW would be added. He was speaking after installing Babu Wali, Suchitra Bukka and Gujja, as nominated members of the factory management board. — Staff Correspondent

Suicide

Bidar: A woman allegedly committed suicide by drinking poison at Hudagi village in Humnabad taluk on Saturday as she was upset by her five sons' refusal to take up employment. Shakeela Moinuddin, 45, was depressed as her sons were unemployed and that they were not ready to learn any skills to take up employment, the police said. She drank poison on Friday. She died in a private hospital in Gulbarga on Saturday.

Two killed in road accident

BELLARY: Two persons died on the spot and 13 others sustained injuries when the tipper, in which they were travelling, overturned near Toranagal on NH 63 on Sunday. Police said the accident occurred when the driver of the tipper lost control while negotiating a curve. All the 15 were labourers were from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal working for R.N. Shetty Company at Bellary Thermal Power Station, and were on their way to Toranagal to make their purchases at the weekly shandy. All the injured were shifted to the VIMS Hospital in Bellary and Sanjivini hospital at Toranagal. The condition of five are said to be serious. — Staff Correspondent

Temple fair

Bidar: The annual fair of the Mailar Mallanna temple in Khanapur in Bhalki taluk began on Sunday. It will go on for a month. Religious ceremonies, processions, discourses and special pujas will be organised as part of the fair. Devotees from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, apart from other districts in the State will participate, said a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

Bidar: A man who allegedly killed his brother, who sought back a loan of Rs. 2,000, has been arrested by Bagadal police. Nagappa Parit faces charges of killing village accountant Vaijanath Parit in Sirsi A village last week. — Staff Correspondent

Cattle donated

Bidar: The Rotary Club of Bidar New Century donated buffaloes to four poor destitute women of the district on Sunday. Sridevi Molkera, Annapurna Ranjol Kheni, Lakshmi Dhummansure and Shantabi Chikpet were given the buffaloes in the first phase. "Another 16 beneficiaries will be selected," said club vice president Mangala Bhagawat. The project is being implemented in 11 districts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh under the Matching Grant Project 59611 of the Rotary International, she said.

Visit

Bidar: A.J. Sadashiva, president of the Scheduled Castes Development

Commission, will visit Bidar on December 6. He will receive grievances from the public at the Zilla Ranga Mandira in Bidar on December 7. He will also seek details from officials and the public about the access of beneficiary communities to the reservation in education and employment. Assaulted

Bidar: A headmistress, who insisted on holding elections to the School Development and Management Committee as per the rules, was assaulted in Shambelli in Aurad taluk on Saturday.

Shobhavati Sale, headmistress of the government primary school has complained to the Santhpur police station that she was also humiliated before the villagers. — Staff Correspondent

Valedictory function

HUBLI: The valedictory function of the 18th batch of "Practical Accounting and Business Taxation" course conducted by the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) was held here recently. Distributing the certificates to the students, Shankranna Munavalli, president of KCCI, announced that the chamber would provide financial assistance to poor meritorious students to get training through the course. Arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli Police arrested five persons on charge of robbing people. In a release, the police have given the names of the arrested as Vijay N. Bagalkoti, Manohar A. Kadam, Ganesh Dattu Hotkar, Laxman R. Bovivaddar and Manjunath L. Hosmani, all residents of Hubli. The police said lethal weapons and two mobile phones have been recovered from the arrested. — Staff Correspondent

Three killed in accidents

MYSORE: Three persons were killed in two road accidents in Maddur taluk of Mandya district on Saturday. The police said that Sunil (25) and Yogesh (28), who were riding a two-wheeler were killed when a lorry knocked them down near Coffee Day shop at Gejjalgere. In another incident, Nanjunda, who was riding a two-wheeler, was knocked down by a tractor on Gowdale Road in Maddur. Pillion rider Mahadeva was injured.

`Christraj Mahotsava'

SHIMOGA: "Christraj Mahotsava" was held here on Sunday for "world peace and brotherhood" amid scenes of religious gaiety and enthusiasm.

Apart from the 30 priests from the 25 churches of Shimoga, Davanagere and Chitradurga districts coming under the jurisdiction of the Shimoga Diocese, a large number of people participated in the celebration. A colourful procession was taken out in the main parts of the city after the mass was conducted by Archbishop Ignatius Pinto, the Bishop of Shimoga Gerald Issac Lobo and the Rev. Father of the Shimoga Sacred Heart Church S.R. Peter. The "Christraj Mahotsava" is held on the last Sunday of November every year.
