Jamaat-e-Islami to back LDF

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to extend support to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Thiruvambadi Assembly byelection.

Jamaat-e-Islami Kerala amir T. Arifali told The Hindu over phone from Kozhikode on Sunday evening that the decision to support the LDF was taken considering the fact that there has not been any change in the global or national situation that had prompted it to back the LDF in the Assembly elections in May and because it is too early to judge the LDF dispensation.

Mr. Arifali said the Jamaat-e-Islami still considers the LDF a greater ally than the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). However, this does not mean that the Jamaat-e-Islami does not have its reservations about the LDF.

Mr. Arifali said the Jamaat leadership had had a dialogue with their LDF counterparts during which the LDF leaders admitted that they could not perform as well as it wished.

"After the dialogue, we felt we must give some more time for them," he said.
