Byelection spells roaring business

Liquor sales reach Rs. 1.33 crores per day


  • The revenue of petrol sales per day has crossed Rs. 75.39 crores in the parliamentary constituency
  • Sources put diesel sales at Rs. 1.43 crores per day in the run-up to the poll

    KARIMNAGAR: Byelection to the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency has become prestigious to all the contesting parties and the campaign has reached its penultimate level with the arrival of hordes of politicians from various parts of the State.

    The constituency has become a beehive of activity with the contesting parties intensifying their campaign in villages and towns. Literally, the politicians had besieged the parliamentary constituency.

    On the other hand, various business communities are doing roaring business, thanks to the bypoll and arrival of hordes of politicians for the campaign.

    Right from an ordinary tiffin centre, restaurants, bars, lodges, petrol filling stations, taxicabs, everyone is doing roaring business. Thanks to the election motorcycle rallies and mobilisation of public for the meetings, the petrol filling stations in the district have doubled their sales.

    The district is having a total of 150 petrol filling stations, including 35 in and around Karimnagar town. On an average, the petrol and diesel sales per day in the district are 20,000 litres and 2.10 lakh litres respectively. However, the sales have crossed 1.80 lakhs litres of petrol per day and 4 lakh litres of diesel per day of diesel in this month after the issuance of election notification.

    Earlier, the revenue of petrol sales per day were at Rs. 42.32 lakhs and now it has crossed Rs 75.39 crores. While, the revenue of diesel sales have increased from Rs. 95.22 lakhs to Rs. 1.43 crores per day in the district, sources said.

    Ever since the end of the filing of nomination process, the liquor sales have reached an all-time high with an average of Rs 1.33-crore per day. The excise officials said that the liquor sales have crossed Rs. 200-crore mark from July to November this year.

    During the excise year of 2005-06, the district liquor sales were Rs. 151.74 crores from April to November. While during this year, the sales have crossed Rs. 200-crore mark from July to November.

    The average liquor sales in the month of November 2005 were Rs. 46.53 lakhs per day. In November 2006, the average liquor sales have reached Rs. 1.33 crores per day.

    Meanwhile, lodges were also filled to its brim with politicians occupying every hotel room in the constituency.
