Call given for greater corporate help for classical music

MANGALORE: The curtains came down on the three-day `Sangeethotsava 2006' here on Sunday with a call for a greater corporate role in patronising classical music. The highlight of the day was the presentation of the `Sangeetha Samrat' award to T.K. Murthy, veteran mrudangam artiste, and awards for three young artistes.

Ananthakrishna, chairman, Karnataka Bank Ltd., who was guest of honour on the occasion, said music had immense power to soothe and relax the mind. Mr. Ananthakrishna, who conferred the Suvasini Hegde Young Talent Award and the T.R. Krishnan Young Talent Award on Dilip K.J. and Usha H. respectively, advised them to continue learning music with diligence and be a model to their peers.

Nalli Kuppuswami Chettiyar, president, Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, presented the Sulochana R. Ballal Best Young Artist award to Krishna Pavan Kumar G.N. He lauded the lead taken by the organisers — Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sangeetha Parishat, Mangalore, the Dr. Mani Krishnaswamy Music Foundation and Mangalore University — in promoting carnatic classical music.

Mr. Kuppuswami Chettiyar said that tradition and purity, which are the hallmarks of carnatic music, were kept alive through such events.

Ishwarayya, eminent music critic, spoke on Mr. Murthy's achievements. G.T. Narayana Rao, senior critic, and Sooralu S. Parameshwara Bhat and Kamala Pattabhiraman, senior music teachers, who were felicitated on the occasion, called on corporate houses to play a role in funding classical music.
