Unauthorised stands

Sir, — There are many unauthorised rickshaw stands in Mangalore. In some cases, the RTA has issued permission to park rickshaws in busy and congested places such as Bendurwell and Dennis Studio, Balmatta.

Many a time, rickshaws are parked near bus stands leading to chaos and traffic congestion. Traffic police take little action to stop this unauthorised parking of rickshaws, which has caused a lot of trouble to the general public.

Develop beach

Sir, — The Panambur beach near Mangalore Harbour, which is one of the main attractions of the city, could have become an oasis for tourists and locals had it been maintained properly. The pathetic condition of the roads and improper sanitation facilities makes it a desert even on the weekends. Steps must be taken to develop the beach.

Sir, — The Ministry of Communications has proposed to slash STD and ISD rates under its OneIndia plan. Landline users account to about 20 to 30 per cent of our population, and only a small percentage of them might use STD and ISD facilities. If the Government is concerned about common people, it should reduce the rental charges or introduce zero rental service and allow more free calls. The call duration can also be increased.

Local calls are free in some foreign countries. Why not make it free in India too?

Sir, — The Government's decision to introduce English from the first standard in Kannada-medium schools from the next academic year should be appreciated.

The decision will enable rural students to compete better with their urban counterparts. The knowledge of English is essential for getting gainful employment in industrial organisations, especially outside the State.
