CHANDIGARH: The annual Chandigarh Carnival has got off to a colourful start at the Leisure Valley here. Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh S.F. Rodrigues inaugurated the two-day event amidst gaiety and enthusiasm. The inaugural ceremony was marked by performances of Bhangra and Giddha, beating of drums, playing of bands and display of distinctive art forms by artistes from different States. Accompanied by Mrs. Jean Rodrigues and senior officials including Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, Finance Secretary S.K. Sandhu, CITCO Managing Director Jasbir Singh Bir, Director North Zone Culture Centre R.T. Zindal and Director Tourism Vivek Attray, the General went round the aesthetically decorated stalls put up by various governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote and market their activities. At the stall put up by the UT State Legal Service Authority, he told the team managers to actively involve themselves in giving legal aid to the poor and needy and also asked Mr.Krishna Mohan to institutionalise a system for ensuring effective delivery services to the people through this novel programme. He instructed the Home Secretary to evolve a comprehensive programme for training students of different schools on a common platform in various skills. This programme should be a commercially viable venture that would help the students to earn while learning. General Rodrigues spent considerable time with the senior citizens, including architects and artists, and visually challenged children who were engrossed in various creative and artistic activities.
