CHENNAI : After year-long gruelling sessions and adventure for volunteers of the National Cadet Corps of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman Nicobar, this Sunday was reserved for celebrating the achievements of the organisation.

Kalaivanar Arangam was packed with cadets clad in khaki uniforms to celebrate the 59th NCC Day.

Presiding over the function organised by the NCC Directorate of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman Nicobar, Environment Minister T. P. M. Moideen Khan, said the State Government had allotted Rs.8.31 lakh this year for NCC training.

The incidental allowance for camps, which was Rs.5, has been increased to Rs. 8 for the students and the pay for the NCC officers has also been doubled, he said.

Lauding the students for winning the coveted honour of Prime Minister's Banner for the 12th time, the Minister said NCC training was more of a prelude to army training. He motivated the cadets to consider careers in army and social service.

The Minister also released the NCC Journal of the year 2006. G. A. Rajkumar, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Secretary, encouraged the students to participate in NCC activities, which were a blend of defence-oriented training and community service. Besides thrilling experiences and opportunities to showcase their talents, the cadets learn to face the challenges of life and also serve the community.

The directorate, which has a cadet strength of about one lakh, was recently presented All India Inter Directorate Championship Banner.
