Commissioning of streetlights

I request the corporation to expedite the commissioning of newly installed street lights on the PE Koil West Mada and North Mada streets in Ayanavaram.

The erection of lampposts with modern fittings, in lieu of the old ones, was completed a couple of months ago, but the lights have still not been commissioned.

Incessant construction noise

I write this to you on behalf of the Lamech Avenue Residents Association.

For over the last 10 months there has been continuous construction activity at No 70, Mayor Ramanathan Salai (Spur Tank Road) in Chetpet, Chennai-31. A new commercial complex is being built and work goes on day and night, almost seven days a week. At night the work goes on under floodlights powered by a diesel power generation set. The noise of hammering and the operation of power tools continue through the night.

The incessant construction noise is disturbing the peace of the neighbourhood. We are not able to sleep because of the noise and the fumes emitted by the diesel power set are a problem for the residents. Because of the noise, children are not able to study. There is also a hospital adjacent to this property.

On November 9, 2006, we made a complaint to the Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai, following which there was relief for a few days.

The construction company does not seem to have any regard for the people of the locality.

Recently, when called 100, the operator in the police control room was sympathetic, he commiserated with me having recognised that I had complained so many times without avail!!

I cannot fault the Police authorities for they must be flooded with such complaints. We request you to kindly publish this in your columns to highlight our problem.

Lack of streetlights

Sixth Main Road in Mogappair West is about 2 km long and houses a home for destitutes, private residential apartments, Government quarters, Naval quarters and a school. The streetlights are only partly functioning along the road. On the stretch of the road from the Government quarters onwards (ending in DAV school road), where the destitutes' home is located, it is pitch dark at night. The streetlights have not been functioning for the past year. The chronically poor condition of the road aggravates the problem of pedestrians and others.

We hope the TNEB will take immediate steps to address the problem.

Poor bus services to Porur

During the morning hours bus, commuters from Guindy are facing difficulty in catching a bus to Porur. The frequency of buses is poor. The buses from Broadway, T. Nagar and Saidapet are already crowded when they reach the Guindy bus stop. Moreover, the buses don't come on time.

The authorities should take immediate action to increase bus services from Saidapet to Porur side, or introduce cut service from Guindy to Porur side/Poonamalee between 7.00 a.m. to 10 a.m./ 5.00 p.m./ 8.00 p.m.

Traffic hazards on the roads

All over the city, especially on Spur Tank Road, Venkatnarayana Road and other roads, a lot of trees have withered. They are dry and ready to fall. If this happens, it pose a danger to the public. Inspite of many calls to the Corporation, there is no action till date. Will the authorities wake up and cut those trees in the interests of the public? The police should curb the use of high pitched horns, musical horns should penalise the indiscriminate usage by vans and other vehicles and create awareness among public.

Stagnant drainage in Vyasarpadi

I wish to highlight the problem of stagnant drainage water in Vyasarpadi. We are residing in Desigananthapuram I Street, (Corporation Ward No.36, Perambur Central near Vyasar Jeeva Rly Stn.) near Ganesapuram, Vyasarpadi, Chennai-600039. Since the rains three weeks ago, the sewer system has been blocked. The living conditions in the area are unbearable, with mosquitoes proliferating and the stink from the sewage is unbearable. Complaints to the local Corporation office have not solved the problem.

We request that the authorities look into the matter and do the needful.

Pleasant surprise

The Railway Border Road at T.Nagar, Chennai, where the vegetable market, was located now sports a pleasing look. The road is clean, and traffic is able to flow easily. Earlier, it was hard for people, especially the aged and handicapped, and office goers to reach the bus stand and railway station.

The authorities responsible for this wonderful job of making the street hawkers disappear deserve praise and the public is grateful to them.

It would be wonderful if the changes are permanent.

Bottleneck in pedestrian subway

Hundreds of commuters use the pedestrian subway near the Park Railway Station. Every day, thousands of long distance passengers with luggage also make use of this subway. Two small biriyani shops are located at the entrance of the subway from the Moore Market side, hindering the free movement of passengers. The congestion at the entrance is posing hardship to the users, specially during peak hours.

I already brought this to the notice of the Corporation a month ago, but no action appears to have been taken.

I would like to draw the attention of the new Commissioner of the Corporation of Chennai to the problem.

Inaction by authorities

The streetlights on the V.K. Iyer Road Extension, Mandaveli, Chennai-28 (Division No.149) are not working for the past few months.

When we contacted the EB authorities, they said the maintenance of streetlights was the responsibility of the J.E. (Street Lights), Chennai Corporation. We contacted the Junior Engineer, Chennai Corporation, over phone several times but to no avail.

The EB authorities told us a month back that they would take up the issue with Chennai Corporation officials.

Senior citizens and children are afraid of coming out of their houses because of the dark streets.

Now six months have lapsed and still nothing has been done, despite several reminders to the authorities.

No streetlights

Some streetlights on the canal road, Thiruvanmiyur, (Division 154) have not been working for several months. Besides recording my complaint in the Divisional Office of the Corporation at Thiruvanmiyur, I have been making repeated phone calls to M/s. Sabari Electricals, the maintenance contractor. Nothing has been done yet.
