Scrap land deal with Care: Central varsity teachers

Staff Reporter

  • Faculty raises doubts over Care Foundation's `contribution'
  • MoU can be modified after discussions, says university's V-C

HYDERABAD: A majority of University of Hyderabad (UoH) faculty have opposed the MoU signed by the university with Care Foundation for setting up the Institute for Health Education and Translation Research on the university land citing discrepancies.

At a meeting called by Vice-Chancellor Seyed E. Hasnain on Saturday to discuss the controversy arising out of the signing of the MoU, senior teachers favoured scrapping of the deal with Care.

They raised questions over the foundation's investments, its `contribution' to society and research apart from its credibility. Teachers observed that views of the Finance Officer and Deans were not taken into account.

The minutes were not presented to the MoU committee, they said and wanted to know as to why an autonomous body was being created for the project when the university itself was autonomous.

They said the MoU was in favour of the foundation as it had the right to sell and dispose of the land if it was not satisfied with the work.

Prof. Hasnain said the teachers' association had raised a few questions and their concerns would be addressed to.

Regarding the demand for scrapping of the deal, he said the Executive Council had the power to do it.

    Allocation `not final'

He said the MoU was just a draft and it could be modified after discussions. Allocation of 200 acres was not final and it would depend on the detailed project report, he noted.

Defending the MoU, the V-C said private-public partnership was inevitable and the university should use the opportunity to raise a world class institution of research.

Prof. Hasnain said he welcomed the suggestions made by the faculty and would call for another meeting soon.
