BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has found fault with a cooperative society for "forging" documents and denying a member of the maturity value of a fixed deposit. It has directed the society to pay the maturity value with interest to the member. V.L. Krishna of Kanakapura had made a fixed deposit of Rs. 1 lakh for a period of five years at the Urban Cooperative Credit Society in 1997. When he approached the society seeking payment of the maturity value of Rs. 2.01 lakh, he was allegedly denied payment on the ground that Mr. Krishna had taken a loan of Rs. 80,000 on the security of the said deposit. Mr. Krishna approached the district consumer forum and filed a complaint, but it was dismissed on the ground that a criminal case was filed against Mr. Krishna by the cooperative society in a Magistrate court. On appeal, the consumer State Commission found that the signatures of Mr. Krishna on three documents differed. Terming it as a case of fraud, the State commission directed the society to pay Rs. 2.01 lakh with interest at 12 per cent an annum to the member. It also asked the society to pay Rs. 5,000 to Mr. Krishna towards the cost of proceedings.
