GUNTUR : The mandal revenue officer and municipal commissioner D. Rama Rao, with the assistance of 60 police personnel removed 300 huts by bulldozing them on Sunday afternoon in the Nallacheruvu area in the city.

These huts had sprung up in the past one year on `poramboke' land of Pikalavagu in the Nallacheruvu area and as per revenue rules they had to be removed, the officials said.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Guntur city unit secretary Y. Srinivasa Rao and member Kalidas were arrested by the East Circle police and released them on bail later.

They alleged that the police beat them when they tried to stop the poclains. The residents did not agree to leave the place and later deputy mayor Tadisetty Murali and Corporator Md. Ghouse arrived at the site.

Self-immolation bid

A youth residing there, Valli, was prevented from self-immolation after he doused himself with kerosene protesting against the removal of the huts. There were tense moments for four hours till evening. The CPI(M) and Awaz, a voluntary organisation, have given a call to the residents to picket the MRO office on Monday.

Among others who participated in the dharna programme at Nallacheruvu were CPI(M) secretary D. Rama Devi, Students Federation of India secretary Lenin and SFI university wing leader Anila.
